Program Note
I composed this cycle at the request of Nancy Aspel Haas, who premiered it at a faculty concert at Walnut Hill School, an arts high school in Massachusetts where we both taught at the time. I discovered the Roman poet Petronius through the wonderful translations of Helen Waddell used here. The songs are ordered to create a chronology of love and desire, from first flush to reminiscence.
