Sargent’s Women at Boston University

Marshall Room 855 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, United States

Sargent's Women - my piano suite inspired by John Singer Sargent's extravagant paintings of iconic female figures - comes to my alma mater, Boston University College of Fine Arts (MMus in Theory and Composition!) on October 12.  Yoonie Han, for whom I composed the suite, brings her commanding performance.  She and I will also present a class at Longy School of Music examining how music and art can influence each other, on October 13.

Premiere of Song Cycle, For Allegra

Elebash Hall CUNY Graduate Center, 365 5th Ave, New York, NY, United States

I'm thrilled that my song cycle For Allegra will finally be heard complete.  Composed for my daughter from 2010 to 2014, as she advanced as a singer through college, the songs set six poems that touched her.  The wonderful Nina Berman will give the first complete performance, with pianist Steven Beck, on her graduate recital at CUNY.

Girl on Fire – Premiere of Complete Cycle

Bruno Walter Auditorium 111 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY, United States

In a last-minute opportunity, I will premiere the complete 13-song cycle Girl on Fire, with Emma Stace Darling, soprano, and your truly at the piano.  Emma's own poetry inspired the work, which we envision evolving into a staged production.  This musical mosaic, in which poetry and song support and enhance each other, presents a young woman whose experience of life is so extreme, that throughout her harrowing physical and emotional journey to redemption, she feels as if she is literally on fire.  The spirituality, the sea, the fire, the equal amounts of exquisite physical and emotional pain, the fearless candor, are part of observations and musings set both in a figurative world and in the reality of 21st-century life, from struggle to salvation.  The concert is free!

Sinfonietta – West Virginia Premiere

Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences of WV 1 Clay Square, Charleston, WV

Sinfonietta - a multi-movement exploration of varieties of religious experience - was co-commissioned by the South Dakota and West Virginia Symphonies, along with several generous individuals. South Dakota Symphony gave the premiere in January 2017. West Virginia is up next, with a substantially revised version, to be conducted by the new music director, Lawrence Loh.
