Program Note
When Jenny Q Chai – pioneer in multimedia piano music – asked me to compose something for her recital Aqua Alta (“high water”), I thought about my relationship with bodies of water. As an angler, I spend much time afloat or standing in rivers and lakes, watching the endless variety and sometimes intoxicating beauty of the water’s surface. Face of the Deep ruminates on that beauty together with the mystery of what lies or swims beneath. For this, my first piece integrated with video, I shot images myself, and then engaged editor Victoria Catherine Chan to help present it in live performance. The premiere takes place October 2 on the Ashmont Hill Chamber Music series in Boston.
