Program Note
The pianist Yoonie Han has become a cherished interpreter and champion of my music, performing the first two pieces I composed for her frequently. This third completes a set inspired by three masterworks by John Singer Sargent, of women in iconic poses. El Jaleo evokes a flamenco dancer at the climax of her performance; Fumee d’Ambre-Gris depicts a woman lost in thought as she inhales incense; Miss Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth terrifyingly presents that Shakespearean character, in resplendent robes and with a mad look in her eye.
