My new piece Mudang – Korean for shaman – was inspired by the haunting sound of the Korean traditional oboe, the piri.  The work exists in two versions: for piri with cello, and for piri with string quartet.  The duo version has its premiere as parts of South Korea’s showcase at Classical Next, a major festival in Vienna.  The piri virtuoso Gamin – for whom I composed the work – will perform with Joon Ho Shim, a fast-rising star in the cello world.
